VOCATIONAL SKILLS ACQUISITION TRAINING
In recognition of the benefit of youth whose values are blended with appropriate skills, ENDIP has embarked upon vocational/technical training programmes for youth in the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria for the past 10 years. This is aimed at conflict prevention, wealth creation and ultimately poverty reduction and economic empowerment resulting in sustainable and economic development of the Niger Delta. This is a great challenge given the peculiarities of the Niger Delta region and the increasing restiveness usually associated with youth.
Our Training Philosophy: Harnessing the Head, Heart and Hands in the training and retraining of 10,000 trainees who will be entrepreneurial leaders in Nigeria equipped with industry relevant skills blended with high quality service of education, training and promotion of learning. We stive to increase the life opportunities of students, improve their employability and support their growth and development. The future of our trainees is our vision. WE BELIEVE... Partners and International Accreditation: We have developed partnerships with local, national and international TVET industry recognised accreditation as reputed training providers. We have both academic and industry qualified national and international assessors in skills development.
We currently have strategic partnerships with Benson Idahosa University and Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori for the delivery and management of Technical Vocational Training, Assessment and Accreditation programmes in Nigeria.
The following are some examples of Technical Vocational Training programmes implemented so far:
Women Empowerment Project, Onne, Rivers State
Vocational Technical Training programme 20 women of Onne Community aimed at building their capacities for skills acquisition, livelihods and alternative income generation and growth of enterprises in the community.The 12month programme was funded by the Community Relations Committee of Onne/Ikpokiri Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority. The consortium of firms was coordinated by Intels Nigeria Limited.
Youth Training Scheme, Sagbama
The Youth Training Scheme, Sagbama is a partnership programme between ENDIP, Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd and Sagbama Local Government Council, Bayelsa State. ENDIP was responsible for administration/management, facilitating the provision of vocational/technical skills and leveraging S.P.D.C’s funding. The main goal of this project was to boost the manpower of S.P.D.C host communities by providing vocational skills to unemployed youths. It also seeks to provide youth with alternative, non-violent skills in conflict transformation and management. The first batch was made up of 125 youths who acquired skills in Carpentry, Welding/Fabrication, Vulcanizing, Computer/Sec. Studies, Fashion Design, Hairdressing and Electrical Installation. The programme provided on the –job training, Trade Test certificates of the Federal Ministry of Employment, Labour & Productivity. At the end of the programme, starter kits were presented to successful trainees.
Rehabilitation/Skill Acquisition for Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs) in Port Harcourt and Warri Metropolis
This project is in fulfillment of ENDIPs commitment to restoring the dignity of womanhood and re-orientation of young women in harnessing and eliciting their inherent latent entrepreneurial skills. It was a four-year pilot programme funded by Shell Foundation under their Sustainable Communities Programme and Shell Petroleum Development Company, Nigeria. It was aimed at providing alternative sustainable means of livelihood for young girls as well as reducing the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus. A total of 60 CSWs were relocated from their brothels and rehabilitated through comprehensive training model. This covered mindset, behaviour change, Sexual/Reproductive health, HIV/AIDS awareness and vocational skills acquisition in Catering, Fashion Design, Computer/Secetarial Studies, Hairdressing and Hat making. It has been a success story with the girls gradually adapting new lifestyles and even acting as peer educators in the programme. Micro-enterprises were established for successful graduates through a revolving microfinance fund.
Survival Skills for Vulnerable Girls
As a follow-up to some of the lessons being learnt from the Rehabilitation of CSWs, ENDIP decided to adopt a preventive approach in tackling the problem of HIV/AIDS. This is the empowerment of 80 unemployed, disadvantaged, less privileged girls who were vulnerable to prostitution and consequently HIV/AIDS. The programme provides them with effective communication skills, mindset and behaviour change, adolescent reproductive health in addition to vocational skills acquisition.
