CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT - INSTITUTIONAL/INDIVIDUAL

In realisation of its overarching mission for capacity-development/training and people-centred development at community level, ENDIP has facilitated several capacity development programmes at both institutional and individual levels in the Niger Delta region in particular and Nigeria in general.  These are a capsule of our capacity development interventions:

 

Business Development & Advisory Support Services for 84 Micro-Enterprise Firms in 21 communities of Abua & Ekpeye Kingdoms of Rivers State. (2006 – 2008)

 

A technical, entrepreneurship and micro-enterprise development training, mindset re-orientation project sponsored by Nigeria LNG Limited aimed at developing capacities of existing community-based micro-entrepreneurs and promoting the growth of new enterprises.  This project also involved the training and capacity building of key informants as community-based training of trainers programme and forward linkage of beneficiaries with external funding agencies and business development organisations.  This project commenced with a baseline survey to identify institutional gaps and training need analysis, gap inventory and organisational development.

 

Nigeria Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Directory Project (2006 - 2007) 

Compilation and validation of NGOs, Faith-Based Organisations, Community Based Organisations involved in OVC programmes in Nigeria.  A national project of the USAID/Federal Ministry of Women Affairs funded through the ENHANSE project, Constella Futures, Washington D.C.  This project involved mapping, capacity assessment of civil society organisations involved in the delivery of OVC programming, production of national directory aimed at effective implementation of a costed national OVC national action plan that provides the framework for scaling –up the national response to OVC programming and delivery in Nigeria.

 

Capacity Building for 90 Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants and Federal Constituency Officers, Delta State Government of Nigeria (2005). 

 

This project was aimed at developing capacity of Governmental officials in developing and effective service delivery of sustainable community development programmes aimed at enhancing performance improvement for productivity in the governance in Delta State.

 

Promoting Stakeholder Participation in Economic Transition (PROSPECT) (2004). 

 

USAID funded project aimed at building the institutional capacities of micro, small & medium enterprise firms & stakeholders (business associations, NGO’S, private sector organisations) for budget tracking and economic management as a strategy for macro economic policy reform in Nigeria.

 

 

Micro and Small Enterprise Sector Study for Rivers and Delta State. (2003)

 

Micro-Enterprise Sector Component of the Niger Delta Regional Master Plan Project Funded by the Niger Delta Development Commission, an Interventionist development agency of the Federal Government Nigeria towards the sustainable and holistic development of the Niger Delta Region using a bottom-up, participatory, process-led approach to development and planning.

 

Institutional Capacity Assessment and Organisation Development for NGOs/CBOs/FBOs (2003)

 

Project funded by Niger Delta NGO Forum and Rivers NGO Consultative Forum and Council of Nigerian NGOs.

 

Personnel Recruitment & Management Training for Odioma Women Action Committee (ODIWAC). (2002)

 

The entrepreneurial drive of the women of Odioma Community in Bayelsa state led to the establishment of the cargo boat transport project. This was expected to serve as an income-generating project for them as well as improve the socio-economic status of the entire community.  The capacity building programme was aimed at enabling them recruit and select the desired quantity and quality of staff and manage them effectively.

 

Youth Business leadership Workshop (2002)

 

30 community-based entrepreneurial focused youth drawn form Oluasiri, Elem-Sangama and Soku communities in Rivers State were trained on Enterprise Development and Management, Leadership and Conflict Resolution. This was aimed at improving their organizational capabilities and business management competence in the group enterprise initiative.

 

Capacity Building/Training of 15 Child-focused NGOs/CBOs (2002)

 

Training aimed at effective service delivery for child and youth development focused organisations.  Project funded by Ashoka/Innovators for the Public. U.S.A.

 

Capacity Building for Income Generating Projects Beneficiaries from Oluasiri, ElemSangama and Soku communities in Rivers State. (2001)

 

A total of 30 persons benefited from this capacity building/training on Management of Group Enterprises. These were beneficiaries of income generating projects such as fishermen from each of the communities.

 

Capacity building for Project Management Committee (PMC) of Sagbama Industrial Unit Renovation Project. (2001)

 

The two-day training was aimed at empowering the members of the PMC to manage and supervise effectively the Sagbama Industrial Renovation programme. The training succeeded in stimulating and eliciting group cohesion amongst committee members to appreciate the challenges and dynamics of leadership and project management. At the end of the exercise, they were able to develop a community friendly management and accounting system.

 

Capacity building for Project Monitoring Committee of Government Comprehensive College, Borokiri Renovation Project. (2001)

 

The renovation of the College was a tripartite agreement between the Rivers State Government, Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd and the Borokiri community in Rivers State. This programme developed the capacity of the PMC members to manage the renovation work effectively.

 

Women Group Capacity Building for Income Generating Projects (2001)

 

The beneficiaries of this programme were over 200 women in Okerenkoko and Odimodi Women Agro-Food Processing Co-operative Societies in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.  Project was funded by the Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited (Western Division)

 

Capacity building for Project management (PMC) of Creek Fishing Venture (An Income Generating Project) for Elem Sangama community in Rivers State (2000)

 

In the year 2000, 20 members of the Project Management Committee (PMC) were empowered with basic skills in agro-enterprise management and non-financial business development services.  The week-long training also covered the challenges of leadership, managing people, conflict transformation and management and effective meeting management. The programme content was in 10 modules and delivery methodology was participatory and highly interactive.

 

 Entrepreneurship & Enterprise Management Development Programme (2002 - 2007)

 

This capacity building programme has been organized for undergraduates at the Universities of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State University of Science & Technology (UST) and the Rivers State College of Education, University of Benin, University of Calabar, Institute of Management & Technology, Enugu, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Federal Polytechnic Auchi etc. This programme is aimed at stimulating entrepreneurship and enterprise development spirit aimed at self-employment development amongst youths.  Special training and career guidance and the challenges ahead had also been organized at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in collaboration with the National Union of Izon Students.

ENDIP intends to expand this programme into an Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Programme to be known as ‘The UGEP Awards’. Funding is still being sought from possible donor agencies for this project.
